mixed franking with Small Figure 5c and Japanese stamps 5s x3, tied by rare oval Customs Chungking datestamp and Shanghai IJPO cds., on reverse with Shanghai Dollar cds., Yokohama, USA transit and arrival cds. This is the only known Japanese combination of Customs Chungking oval datestamps. Mizuhara "Huayou Jijin II" vol. 7, p.12.
plus 5 single stamps CTO by (Jan 4-31) cds., all earlier than the formal first day of C.I.P. The Chinese Imperial Post which was scheduled to start on Jan 1, 1897, but later changed to Jan 1 of the Lunar Calendar, which is Feb 2 of the solar calender. Since the Shanghai Customs PO had accepted advance orders of the foreign collectors and dealers, led to the "pre-first day" CTO of those stamps. The cds. dated Jan 2, 1897 is known only on the 6 values of Dowager surch issues, that is 1c, 2c, 4c, 5c, 8c and 30c. Mizuhara "Huayou Jijin II" vol. 7, p.8.
