together with a 1937 Deutsch-Asiatische Bank receipt issued on behalf of the Chinese Government for coupons of the 5% Tientsin-Pukow Railway loans of 1908 and 1910, all printed in German with serial numbers, signatures and seals, relating to the later settlement and restructuring of Chinese railway foreign loans, a useful reference group for the study of China’s railway finance history.
including a 1931 Shanghai Municipal bond, Canton-Hankow Railway bonds for $10 and $20, Republic of China National Salvation bonds, Kwangtung provincial lottery-style public bonds, Kwangtung Railway $10 bonds, and a 1939 Ministry of Finance Second Lottery Loan bond for $50, several retaining partial coupons, printed with Sun Yat-sen portraits, national flags, official seals and signatures, an interesting group relating to Republican railway development, local finance and wartime fundraising.
including coloured lithographic maps such as Johnson’s Asia and German atlas plates, showing mountains, rivers, borders, cities and routes, reflecting contemporary Western geographical knowledge of Asia; with some staining, folds, edge wear and traces of age, but still an interesting group for cartographic study, historical reference and decorative collecting.
showing China’s proposed transport and development network, with railways, branch lines, waterways, shipping routes, ports and major cities, together with inset maps of Manchuria, Canton, Shanghai, Tientsin and other key areas. Such maps relate to the early Republican vision of national reconstruction associated with Sun Yat-sen’s Industrial Plan, emphasizing railways, ports and communications as the foundation of China’s modernization, an attractive historical map with collectible and research interest.
