Long 21 days trip P & O Malta HK- Galle, FV P & O Madras: Galle - Suez, French also left Egypt on 5.8, but this cover went by P&O to Mar. (P&O took over Malta-Mar. service from Br. Admiralty at beginning of 1853, previously, mail paid only to Alexandria went on to Mar. by French paquebots).

On reverse with Canton originainting datestamp, Hong Kong transit and London arrival cds. It is the only recorded Hong Kong ship letter handstamp which was applied to mails carried by private ships from Treaty Ports to Hong Kong for further transit. Only around 30 examples exist. Most of them sent from Shanghai while a few from Canton or Macao. Cover stained. F-VF.
