The cover was sent shortly before the outbreak of the Pacific War, the cover was not dispatched and remained in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation, bearing the cachet “DETAINED IN HONG KONG / BY THE JAPANESE / FROM DECEMBER 1941 TO SEPTEMBER 1945,” indicating it originated from mailbags containing international correspondence that were held throughout the occupation and only recovered after Japan’s surrender, subsequently released and forwarded, an important and collectible example of Hong Kong wartime postal history.
