capturing a bustling street parade on Des Voeux Road Central in front of the iconic Oriental Hotel (東亞旅館) and its Chinese and Western Restaurant (中西酒菜) founded by the Sincere Company; a superb historical record of early 20th-century Hong Kong architecture, tramways, and urban social life, showing some natural age-toning and a minor paper loss to the left margin not affecting the main subject.
showing China-related scenes including the Boxer uprising, foreign legations at Peking, Li Hung Chang escorted by Russian and Japanese troops, Shanghai review of French detachment, German sailors burning the Tsung-li-Yamen, assassination of Baron von Ketteler, and Russo-British incident in China, with dramatic contemporary color lithographic illustrations, mixed condition with edge wear and toning.
comprising an 1899 Le Petit Journal cover showing the assassination of two French officers at Kwangchow Wan, a 1900 Le Petit Parisien cover depicting the European Legations besieged in Peking during the Boxer period, and a 1901 Le Petit Parisien cover of a dynamite explosion at Cugny, all with striking colour front-page illustrations and reflecting French popular journalism on China and contemporary world events; toned, with edge tears and wear, still an attractive historical group.
