1844 entire letter sheet sent from Macau (8.6 ) to Old Rain, GB ( 19.9 )

1 of early 4 times before P&O extended to Hong Kong. Cover carried by HMS Driver from HK to Bombay. Long 19 days voyage by EIC Sesostris Bombay to Aden (Typically 9-12 days, delayed apparently due to heavy monsoon). Oriental detained 11 days waiting for mail from Bombay.

Amoy-HK ship lettter fee apparently avoided, " 1/10 " per 1/2 ounce for British packet to Gibraltar (early use of this rate effective in 1846). Mail sent to Galle by HMS Espiegle. earilest recorded date for " Paid at Hong Kong " Webb type 6. Also with a seldom seen Malta disinfection cds.

1/- prepaid only to Alexandria, France charged addresee "10" decimes for Mediterranean and inland transit. Long 21 days trip P & O Malta HK- Galle, FV P & O Madras: Galle - Suez, French also left Egypt on 5.8, but this cover went by P&O to Mar. (P&O took over Malta-Mar. service from Br. Admiralty at beginning of 1853, previously, mail paid only to Alexandria went on to Mar. by French paquebots).
