Amid the rapid hyperinflation of the Gold Yuan, sharply rising postal rates, and shortage of adhesive stamps, postage meter labels were employed to meet high-value franking requirements. The label was produced by the “Hu Type 4” franking machine, the only machine in operation in Shanghai at the time, and constitutes an important example of extremely high Gold Yuan meter usage, possibly among the highest recorded values during the Silver Yuan period still paid in Gold Yuan.
