tied by “SHANGHAI 14 V 38” cds. This represents an exceptionally high-value usage of a Gold Yuan postage meter label, with such large denominations seldom encountered. Used after the introduction of the Silver Yuan postal system on Apr 29, 1949, yet still paid in Gold Yuan, illustrating a transitional period between the two currency systems. Amid the rapid hyperinflation of the Gold Yuan, sharply rising postal rates, and shortage of adhesive stamps, postage meter labels were employed to meet high-value franking requirements. The label was produced by the “Hu Type 4” franking machine, the only machine in operation in Shanghai at the time, and constitutes an important example of extremely high Gold Yuan meter usage, possibly among the highest recorded values during the Silver Yuan period still paid in Gold Yuan. Such commercial postal fragments are of great rarity, offering significant postal history and exhibition value for the study of 1949 inflation, currency transition, and practical operation of postage meter systems.
